I’m in Europe!!! Alan and I arrived safely in the Netherlands a few days ago, and we’re just starting to get our bearings as we begin our river boat cruise down the Danube.
So far, it’s been an effort finding dairy- and gluten-free meals, so I’m pretty happy I made the effort to bring lots of healthy snacks to stay fueled for all of our adventuring:
You can see I brought along quite a selection, but I’ll you show you them all, with some thoughts on each one. I’m hoping to explore some of the fresh markets and natural food stores here in Europe, too, and I’ll be sure to share my findings in a future blog post, too.
For now, here are my Top 8 Healthy Travel Snacks that are all gluten-free and dairy-free!
1. Bulletproof bars:
These have a really nice mix of protein and fat. They are really delicious and satisfying, with quality ingredients like collagen protein, cashew butter, and chicory root fiber, however, they are on the expensive side at almost $3 each. Also, they are very sweet, almost too sweet, although they are sugar-free and sweetened with stevia:
2. Jilz crackers:
These are gluten-free and grain-free (paleo and vegan), and such a tasty snack. They have quality ingredients like chia seeds and flax and are easily packable, but they’re actually a bit on the overly salty side for me (Alan loves them though):
This is the only brand of jerky I’ll eat due to the high quality of animal ingredients used. All of the options are high in protein, but some are overly sweet or salty. Since I can’t eat any dairy or whey protein, they are such a great option for protein on the go:
4. Pili nuts:
These are marketed as the most delicious nut on the planet and I might have to agree with that claim! Creamy and slightly salty, these are high in fat, but very satisfying. The only downside is that they are expensive and can be hard to find:
5. Dark chocolate:
I usually go for 85% cocoa, but Alan prefers the slightly sweeter 73%. My fave brand is the Green & Blacks, but chocolate while traveling is a must. Period.
6. Dried pineapple:
I found these at Trader Joe’s and I love that they are unsweetened and unsulfured. Dried fruit in general is more of a healthy travel dessert than anything, but much healthier than anything else you’ll find in an airport, IMHO:
7. Rx bars:
I was introduced to these bars at Paleo Fx earlier this year. The ingredients are fantastic, you can see everything in large letters on the front of the package. Brilliant! I wish they were organic. I can only eat about half at a time because I’m not super tolerant of egg whites. But, overall, a balanced bar that is very satisfying.
8. Picky Bars:
I also found these at Trader Joe’s. I love the ingredients except folks intolerant of peanuts need to beware. These walk the line between protein bar and candy bar, but they are easy to pack and gluten-free.
My bag couldn’t possibly fit anymore. What healthy snacks did I miss that you love?
