Welcome to the 3rd meeting of the Healthy Blogger Book Club (see the notes from previous meetings here)!
Today’s book, It was Me All Along, is less science-based and much more feelings-based:
The book is a memoir by fellow blogger Andie Mitchell, focusing on her recovery from binge-eating disorder.
To be honest, I was kind of scared to read this book, even though I kept hearing about how good it was. The reason is because of my history of disordered eating, and I felt scared that the book would bring back too many bad memories.
My fears were a bit played out as Andie describes very accurately how food can be used addictively for comfort and safety. Her childhood trauma came from having an alcoholic father and too much time spent alone, and I felt so much empathy, plus some discomfort, reading details of her darkest days.
Spoiler alert: the book has a happy ending! After reaching her highest weight of almost 300 pounds, Andie begins the most difficult challenge of all in learning how to love herself. My favorite part is when she goes to Italy for a study-abroad program and learns the art of moderation and finding joy outside of the overconsumption of food.
Also, I was so happy that Andie didn’t end up losing half of her body weight with restriction, but by embracing all that life has to offer, including following her dream of becoming a food writer. She writes her story with so much honesty, but also with a positive point of view that I found very refreshing and inspiring!
In fact, I think one of the main reasons why this book has been so successful is because it’s imparts a bit of “self-help” without having any intention of being a diet or self-help book. Just reading about her journey made me think more positively about my own relationship with food.
Now it’s your turn! This book club is all about the sharing of thoughts and information, so I would really love to have your participation. You’re a member just by leaving a comment or linking up your review of this book (or your own choice of book) here:
