Being healthy in your 50s does not just happen, it entails a lot of discipline, courage and hard work. With all these delicious foods that we see every single day, we always end up battling whether to indulge or not. Get rid of foods which have high levels of salt such as processed meats and canned foods. You have to regulate your salt intake to prevent kidney complications. Our body is not designed to take in too much salt. When there’s too much salt in the body, it will accumulate in the bloodstream making it harder for the kidneys to eliminate enough sodium. It will attract and hold water and then blood volume will increase. Increased levels of blood makes the heart work extra harder and it increases pressure to the arteries which can lead to congestive heart failure and chronic kidney disease. Stick to a low-salt diet, avoid eating canned foods and processed meats. Always eat fresh produce as much as possible.
Cut back on foods which are high in saturated fats. What are these foods? Fatty cuts of meat, fried chicken with skin, whole-milk dairy products, cheese, ice cream, hydrogenated vegetable oil, kernel oil and coconut oil. Saturated fat is mainly the cause of high levels of bad cholesterol in the body. You also want to stay away from foods which have high levels of trans fatty acids. These are usually your commercial baked products like cookies or those packaged foods like cake mixes, Bisquick and ramen noodles. You may also want to visit fast foods less frequently simply because the food that they serve is unhealthy. Stick to lean cuts of meat, whole grain products and increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. Get rid of soda and drink more water instead. If you start choosing healthier alternatives then your road to being fit won’t be too difficult.
