Today’s “What I Ate Wednesdays” post comes from the German countryside!
It was so interesting exploring all the small towns on the Rhine river, and an experience I’ll never forget:
Since Alan and I were on a river boat, we got to stop each day in a new town. On some days, we woke up to castles on the hillside:
On other days, we were surrounded by vineyards:
One of my favorite small villages we explored was called Wertheim that was so charming:
While we were making all of these stops in the Germany countryside, I always started the day with my regular river boat breakfast of smoothie and gluten-free muesli, plus black tea.
Then, we almost always did a walking tour of the town-of-the-day for a nice bit of exercise and sight-seeing:
We usually preferred to go back on the boat for lunch, but one time the river started to rise and the captain had to move our boat to ensure he was able to pass below one of the very low bridges. We were a bit stranded until a bus picked us up to meet the boat further down the river, but we made do.
In this case, the most basic meal that I could find where I didn’t have to worry about gluten or dairy was at a local hotel restaurant. I picked boiled beef with root vegetables (that’s fresh horseradish grated on top):
An afternoon snack does seem to be big in the German countryside. In this case, it wasn’t “kaffee und kuchen,” but wine and little sandwiches (I ate just a bit of the meat one and had water instead of wine. Wow, healthy eating is so boring sometimes, ha ha):
I don’t think we had any dinners off the boat, so it was great to have lovely meals like this salmon and gluten-free pasta once we were safely back on-board:
You can bet I made room for this gorgeous chocolate cake-thingie that the pastry chef on the river boat made special for me. I cannot resist anything chocolate!
All in all, I think I ate pretty well on this trip! I hope you’re not too tired of my Deutschland re-cap, I have the last one for you next week from a walled medieval city.
